The Nobel Prize in Literature: Controversy and Literary Politics

Abstract

Over the years, the Comittee for the Nobel Prize in Literature has had to deal with various accounts of criticism. One of these is that they seem to be too Eurocentric, focussing on white, European-based authors instead of taking into account authors from the world, which is what Alfred Nobel intended. However, as proved in this thesis, the Committee cannot be judged too harshly, for there are factors into play that they cannot control. In this thesis, these factors are explored and possible solutions are proposed.
