Abstract

The Dutch language is generally considered to be V2. However, in some cases the finite verb appears in the third position, creating a V3-sentence. Usually temporal and locative adverbs preceding the verb are involved in this type of sentences. Three authors, Barbiers (1995), Van Craenenbroeck (n.d.) and Haegeman (2010) each give an explanation for this syntactic phenomenon. This bachelor thesis reviews these explanations and compares them. A unified theory of Van Craenenbroeck’s and Haegeman’s account will prove to be the best explanation for the Dutch V3-construction.
