Abstract

In this thesis, the author translates an excerpt from The Owner’s Manual for the Brain by Pierce J. Howard. Before translating, the personification and the popular science text will be discusses theoretically. The personification poses translational problems such as a heightened degree of metaphorisation. The author will give an overview of possible strategies for translating the personification that are posed by other linguists and then conclude which methods she will be using herself. The use of these strategies will be demonstrated in an annotated translation. The thesis concludes with a reflection of the translational strategies and the effect they have on the translation.
