Abstract

The aim of this article is to investigate whether the effect of individuals’ education level on the degree of job status and job satisfaction, differs between men and women. Using the role congruity theory and the gender-job-satisfaction paradox, hypotheses on gender differences in the returns to education are formulated. The hypotheses are tested using data from the Dutch Labor Supply Panel. The analyses of the effect of education level on job status shows that the returns to education are smaller for men than for women. The analyses of the effect of education level on job satisfaction shows an equal returns to education.
