Abstract
This thesis examines the Troubles through the lens of Jurgen Habermas' theory of the Public Sphere. It argues that the IRA was among others, an alternative public sphere created by the Catholics after it became clear that they would not be adequately represented in the broader public sphere of Northern Ireland.
