Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find if institutional logics theory can add value to current frameworks concerning technological innovation systems (TIS). These analytical frameworks are often used to identify problems hindering successful diffusion of technological innovations. Current TIS frameworks do not provide a way for analysts to deal with contradicting perceptions of these problems. To overcome these difficulties, a complementary analysis using institutional logics theory is proposed in this research. Institutional logics theory provides a framework using ideal types to show why actors perceive something as a problem. A case study of smart grid applications used together with decentral energy generation in residential accommodations was performed to test the possibilities of the complementary analysis. The results provide a first indication that such a complementary analysis can add value.
