Abstract

In this bachelor thesis the relationship between parents’ role strain and externalizing problem behavior in adolescents is examined. Parenting style is analysed as a possible mediator and gender as a possible moderator. Data was collected of 320 Dutch secondary school pupils between 10 and 15 years old with different educational levels (both lower and upper secondary school). It was found that for both parents, experiencing role strain is indeed related to increased externalizing problem behavior in adolescents. Parenting style, however, does not mediate this relationship. Also, girls are more submitted to externalizing problem behavior when their mother experiences role strain, than are boys. This finding does not apply to fathers’ role strain.
