Public and Private or North and South: Considering Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel and its 2004 adaptation in their respective contexts

Abstract

This paper argues that the Victorian view on public and private matters in North and South must be replaced to present the audience with an adaptation that has the same meaning as the source material, and that the 2004 adaptation does so by intensifying the contrast between North and South.
