Abstract
The influenza virus is a serious threat to the world's population. A lot of research is focussed on inhibition of an essential viral enzyme: neuraminidase. This enzyme mediates viral release from infected cell's and theirby spreading of the virus amongst other cells or people. This thesis describes neuraminidase inhibitors and their synthetic pathways, from the first synthesis to improved large scale synthesis strategies. Furthermore, research towards new inhibitors is reviewed. The last chapter describes the various assays that can be used to evaluate inhibitory potency of neuraminidase inhibitors.
