Abstract

This focus of this thesis is the concept of family. It places this concept in the context of extreme poverty, violence, criminality and social exclusion. The research was conducted in barrio Sinai in San Jose, Costa Rica. This thesis shows that family in a this local context can have both positive and negative effects; it is a Janus-headed concept.
