The Problems of Subtitling Slang

Abstract

This study will begin with a short examination of subtitling and slang in general and will conclude with an analysis of the way in which slang in the spoken dialog of the films Juno and Wild Child has been subtitled. Although it is impossible to render American and English slang into Dutch subtitles without losing cultural information, several strategies can be applied to solve translation problems.
