Changing Water Availability A Regional Study of the Consequences & Farmers’ Adaptation Strategies and Responses In Tukucha Nala & Panchakanya Irrigation System, Nepal

Abstract

A cross regional qualitative research in two farmer managed irrigation systems in the Terai and Hills of Nepal on changing water availability; mainly through changing natural precipitation patterns and the consequences thereof on individual farmer level. Perceptions of farmers on these changes and their responses, coping behaviour and adaptive capability are outlined. To a minor extent the responses and adaptation strategies on the institutional level of the Water User Associations have been taken into account as well. A major component of the study has the focus on adaptation strategies through on farm activities and responses through off farm activities which is a form of livelihood diversification and reduces farmers their livelihood vulnerability.
