Wha's Hud Ma Fuckin Jellies? The Translation of Non Standard Language in Irvine Welsh’s Novel Porno

Abstract

This thesis focuses on the problem of translating source text dialect of Irvine Welsh's 2002 novel, Porno. It does so by analysing dialect in speech, literature and translation, both in English and in Dutch. After this, the various possible translation strategies for Welsh's novel are examined, after which the best of these strategies, or combination of strategies, will become apparent. This 'most desirable' way of translating is then put to the test in the transaltion of selected fragments of the novel.
