Hoe transparant ben je? Het Verschil in Illusion of Transparency en Stress bij het Houden van een Geheim voor Vrienden en Onbekenden.

Abstract

Objective The current study tried to find a link between illusion of transparency [IOT] and the relationship quality between friends and strangers. To discover whether illusion of transparency does occur during this experiment, we used secret keeping as a way to investigate the extent to which participants overestimate their partner’s ability to detect the secret. Method Ourstudy used a convenience sample of young adults (N=65) with ages ranging from 18 to 26. We used several questionnaires to establish the relationship quality, the level of stress each participant experienced during the experiment and the extent to which IOT presented itself. To operationalize secret keeping, we used the game The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow . In this game, the key is to keep your identity a secret for as long as possible. Results Our analyses showed several significant results for IOT and relationship quality. Conclusion Overall our results indicate that IOT does indeed occur when participants are asked to keep a secret. The participants tend to overestimate the extent to which their partner is able to detect their secret.
