Abstract
Industry is a term strongly connected to the 19th century Industrial Revolution. But what did it mean for those living in that time? In this thesis we try to answer how two groups of people looked at the changes in their society in their time. For this purpose we first follow two writers, Charles Dickens and Elisabeth Gaskell, as they develop their view on the social consequences of the Industrial Revolution. Next, we follow the scientists William Thompson, who became baron Kelvin of Largs, as he develops his new technical progressions. Finally these two views are combined to form a part of the answer of what the Industrial Revolution meant for those living in that era.
