Abstract
This study aims to provide insight into the influence of local language use in EMI
multicultural classrooms in Bulgaria. Specifically, it tries to answer the question: To what
extent does the use of local language influence class participation in EMI multicultural
classrooms in Bulgaria? In this study a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews was used. The findings suggest that the influence of local language on class participation is minimal for Erasmus students, and positive for Bulgarian students. This research tries to contribute to the discussion of the influence of local language in EMI multicultural classrooms by exploring the effect on class participation in Bulgaria.
