Abstract

YA supernatural romance fiction has a tendency to portray gender stereotypical characters in a patriarchal romance; namely a submissive heroine and a controlling alpha-male lover. Focusing on Twilight and The Mortal Instruments the thesis compares these books with the YA dystopian fiction books The Hunger Games and Divergent to compare the heroines, their lovers and their relationship. This outlines the difference and analyses the cause for these characterisations and its ongoing popularity despite these issues.
