Abstract

Objective: This study examined the influence of parental criticism and emotional support on the development of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), in adolescents with a low, medium and strong temporal spatial integration. Method: Adolescents of different high schools in the Netherlands completed two times, with and in between of one year, the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED), the Spatial Continuity of Identity Questionnaire (SCIQ) and the questionnaire for the Level of Expressed Emotion (LEE). At the first wave the adolescents had just started high school, during the second wave all the adolescents had turned to the second class of high school. Results: The results indicated that the influence of parental criticism as well as too much parental support resulted in more symptoms of GAD. In contrary to the expectations, a strong spatial identity was not found to be a protective factor. Conclusions: The study extends but also replicates earlier findings of the influence of parental criticism and emotional support on the development of GAD.
