NATO in Crisis: Comparing the Iraq Controversy with the Gaullist Challenge

Abstract

This thesis provides a comparative historical analysis of two NATO crises: the Iraq controversy and the Gaullist challenge. By examining the differences and similarities between these crises it becomes apparent that they followed a similar pattern, which consisted of five phases: perceived unilateralism, consternation, anticipation, a unilateral move and, finally, solution. This leads to new insights on both crises, particularly concerning their begin- and end dates. It is found that the Gaullist challenge lasted from 1963 till 1967. The Iraq controversy began in 2002 and ended in 2010. This research also sheds a new light on the nature and duration of the two most severe crises in NATO's history.
