Abstract
Media archaeology has been described by various scholars in various ways as a method, field or approach to media objects. Emphasis has been placed on a non-teleological perspective, on focusing on material as well as non material aspects, on discursive and non-discursive aspects. However, every scholar seems to place their own twist on media archaeology resulting in a complex situation and sometimes even contradictory. This research project traces back the common sources from which media archaeology pulls and explains how these twists and differences can occur. It also provides a framework from which to start media archaeological research.
