Abstract
This thesis argues that Wilkie Collins draws on many elements from classical tragedy for his 'Armadale'. Special attention is paid to inherited sin, dream visions, and the characterisation of Miss Gwilt. The paper includes concise background information on the author, the manner of publication, and reviews of the novel, as well as a modest introduction to classical tragedy in general.
